How to Use a Trezor Hardware Wallet

Educational guide · Updated September 2026

Security warning: Your wallet backup/recovery words are the key to recovering your wallet. Never share them and never type them into a website. Only follow prompts displayed by your genuine Trezor device and official Trezor software.

1. Start with the official Trezor software

For a new device, use Trezor's official getting-started page and download Trezor Suite from an official Trezor domain. Avoid download links sent by strangers, advertisements, social-media messages, or unsolicited support accounts.

2. Connect and verify the device

Connect the hardware wallet and follow the setup instructions shown in Trezor Suite and on the device. The official setup flow includes a device-security check before creating or recovering a wallet.

3. Create a wallet and make the backup

During wallet creation, the device/software guides you through creating a wallet backup. Write the words down offline on the supplied backup material or another secure offline method recommended by the manufacturer.

4. Receive cryptocurrency

To receive an asset, use the receiving address displayed by the wallet software and verify important details on the hardware device when prompted. For large transfers, consider sending a small test transaction first.

5. Send cryptocurrency

When sending, carefully check the destination address, asset/network, and amount. Confirm transaction details on the hardware device rather than relying only on what is displayed on the computer screen.

6. Keep software and firmware current

Install updates only through official Trezor software and follow the manufacturer's instructions. Be suspicious of websites offering unofficial firmware, emergency recovery tools, or remote support.

7. Common scams to avoid

Fake support

Real support should not ask you to reveal your wallet backup words or private keys.

Fake recovery forms

A page asking you to type your recovery words is a major warning sign.

Fake downloads

Use the official Trezor website instead of links from unsolicited messages.
